LOS ANGELES—The reward has been hiked to $11,700 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of poachers who killed a cougar in the Santa Monica Mountains last month.

The California Department of Fish and Game said Wednesday that the city of Calabasas has matched an earlier $5,000 reward offer by the Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust.

The Ventura County-based nonprofit Animal Rescue Team also pledged $1,500 and San Diego's Mountain Lion Foundation added $200.

The 7-year-old male mountain lion was discovered Sept. 11 in a Ventura County canyon and investigators determined it was killed and mutilated by poachers.

The cougar had been tracked for nearly two years by National Park Service scientists, but in late August, the animal's collar stopped transmitting signals.
